Netflix just dropped the main trailer for Boyfriend on Demand, and it sells the series on a hook that’s instantly legible in 2026: romance as a service — curated, customized, and delivered in fantasy-ready scenarios.
But the trailer doesn’t play it as pure escapism. It frames the “virtual boyfriend” concept as a pressure valve for real life — and then lets the emotional consequences spill back into the real world. Can a perfectly designed virtual romance ever compete with the messy, unpredictable realities of real love? That’s the central question Boyfriend on Demand sets out to explore.

A dating fantasy designed like an app
Boyfriend on Demand follows Mi-rae (Jisoo), a webtoon producer worn out by her daily grind, who steps into a subscription-based virtual dating simulation that promises dream dates on demand. Inside the show, Boyfriend on Demand is not only the title — it’s also the in-story service: a platform offering custom-made fantasy scenarios tailored to each user’s ideal type.
That framing matters because the trailer makes the virtual world feel less like sci-fi and more like a glossy extension of what dating already looks like: choice, personalization, instant access, and the temptation to edit discomfort out of the experience.

The trailer’s real selling point: variety
Netflix positions the show as a rapid-fire romantic playground — one where Mi-rae can move through completely different “universes” of romance without leaving the same series. The trailer leans into that idea with a parade of scenarios: a fairytale-like prince encounter, a first-love-at-school mood, a confident doctor, a secret agent on a mission, and even an A-list celebrity sweep.
Office life, real chemistry, and the slow-burn complication
The series doesn’t stay in fantasy mode. Netflix says the story is set against the familiar rhythm of office life, using the virtual boyfriend concept to explore the gap between perfect fantasy and imperfect reality.
That’s where Kyeong-nam (Seo In-guk) comes in. Back in the real world, Mi-rae keeps running into him, and the two gradually become “overtime work buddies.” As the trailer frames it, the quiet spark that builds there starts to complicate Mi-rae’s idea of what a “perfect match” even means.
The dating manager and the rules of the game
Another key character in the trailer is the dating manager (Yoo In-na) — the person who welcomes Mi-rae into the service and guides her first steps into the simulation. Netflix describes Mi-rae stepping out of her dull routine and into the platform for the first time, then being pulled into one dreamy situation after another.
The “virtual boyfriends” lineup is stacked
The series features special appearances from Seo Kang-jun, Lee Soo-hyuk, Ong Seong-wu, Lee Jae-wook, Lee Hyun-wook, Jay Park, Kim Young-dae, and Lee Sang-yi — each bringing a different flavor of romance to Mi-rae’s simulated love life. Ha Young and Yoo In-na also boosts the show’s playful energy.

What the director says about Jisoo’s virtual-world performance
Director Kim Jung-sik has said he focused on portraying Jisoo’s charms in a versatile way, using different occupations and subtle variations so her virtual-world acting would feel distinct from Mi-rae in reality. “One of the most appealing points of Boyfriend on Demand is that the main character experiences different romantic relationships with various individuals, in diverse settings and universes, all within a single series. As such, viewers can enjoy a wide spectrum of romantic comedies,” director Kim Jung-sik says.
Speaking about the virtual dating sequences, he shares, “I focused most on portraying the many charms Jisoo has in the most versatile way possible. To do this, I used different occupations and added subtle variations to her character in the virtual world so that her acting style would feel distinct from Mi-rae in reality.”
