The United States of America has never been a monarchy, so it has never had a Royal Family that embodied the national identity. The famous Kennedy family, which needs little introduction, is perhaps the closest thing to an American Royal Family, especially due to their ongoing political commitment spanning generations: ambassadors, congressmen, ministers, and a president: JFK. The tragic, violent, and mysterious deaths of JFK himself and his brother Robert have, in misfortune, made this Irish-American dynasty even more legendary.

Already the focus of numerous TV and film productions, the Kennedys will soon star in a new series just announced by Netflix, inspired by the book by Fredrik Logevall, “JFK: Coming of Age in the American Century, 1917-1956“. The series will feature Michael Fassbender as the patriarch Joe Kennedy Sr. and will tell the story of “the triumphs and tragedies of the Kennedy family,” as announced.

Triumphs and Tragedies
There have been many triumphs and tragedies for this dynasty, which gave the United States the 35th president, as well as a New York senator and presidential candidate, both assassinated. Rumors about the so-called “Kennedy curse” grew stronger when, among other tragic events, John F. Kennedy Jr. — son of the former president — died alongside his wife and sister-in-law in a plane crash in 1999.

The Irresistible Rise of the Kennedy Family
According to the official synopsis, the series will begin long before John F. Kennedy’s election to the White House. The first season, set in the 1930s, will tell “the unlikely rise of Joe and Rose Kennedy and their nine children, including the rebellious second son Jack, who struggles to escape the shadow of his older brother, the family’s ‘golden boy’.” Rose Fitzgerald was the daughter of the Boston mayor, and Joe Kennedy, who built an empire from humble beginnings, was, among other things, an ambassador to London.

“An American Mythology”
“
The story of the Kennedys is the closest thing to American mythology we have — halfway between Shakespeare and Beautiful. But Fredrik Logevall’s extraordinary and nuanced biography lifts the veil on the ambitions and human burdens behind the myth, revealing as much about our present — how we got here and where we’re going — as about the Kennedys themselves,” said showrunner Sam Shaw, as reported by CNN. The series — not to be confused with “American Love Story”, Ryan Murphy’s production about JFK Jr. — does not yet have an official release date. It will consist of eight episodes.
